![]() ![]() The Jaigarh fort or the fort of victory is the most spectacular of the three-hilltop forts that overlook. Jaigarh Fort is perched on the top of the hill, by the name of Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles). It’s like an extension to Amber Fort with Amber Fort at the bottom of the hill and the Jaigarh Fort at the top of the hill. The Fort was built between the 15th and the 18th century, and stands 15 km from Jaipur, amidst rock-strewn, thorn-scrub covered hills, its forbidding stone ramparts are visible from the Jaipur town. The wall of the fort spread over a distance of about 3 kilometers. As one approaches the fort from the steep road that leads to the main gate, the Dungar Darwaza, a magnificent structure, one cannot help but remark at the amazing view it offers of the city below. The other entrance to the fort is through the Awani Darwaza in the east. The purpose of building the Jaigarh fort was to strengthen the defense of Amber and Jaipur. The fort was used as the place for artillery production by the Rajputs and huge battlements surround the fort which offers a breath taking view of the surrounding area. Due to this fact, one may not find this fort as artistic as other forts and palaces, but it certainly has its own charm. Jaigarh Fort was also used as the treasury of the royal family of Jaipur. Jaigarh Fort is a remarkable feat of military architecture .The highlight of this fort is World's biggest wheel mounted Cannon Jai Ban. It was manufactured in Jaigarh's foundry in the year 1720. This twenty feet long barrel is made of alloy steel, Weighing 50 tons with an 8m barrel and a trajectory of about 20km. Such was its might that it took four elephants to swivel it around on its axis.There is an arrangement of turning the gun by wheels and roller fix pins. Its main wheels on which it stands is of 9ft height.100 kg of gun powder can be loaded to on the cannon. The Fort discloses the mastery over architecture of the former age. The water supply of Jaigarh fort and its storage reservoirs are a marvel of engineering. The Fort has a lot of wide water channels, which were a part of a rainwater harvesting system. There are 3 underground tanks at the fort, the largest one of which could store 60,00,000 gallons of water.The fort could withstand long sieges without much difficulty as a result of the ingenious water supply. Inside the Jaigarh fort there is an armory and a museum. The armory has an assortment of swords, shields, guns, muskets and even a 50 kg cannon ball, which would take you back to the gallantry days of the Kings. The museum has a remarkable collection of coins, puppets, photographs of the royal kings, buildings, processions and even a circular pack of cards besides many other remnants of the past. Apart from the abovementioned features, there are other fascinating things to look out for in the Jaigarh fort. Of all the open halls the most interesting one is the Shubhat Niwas (the Meeting hall of Warriors). It houses numerous remnants of old times. The imposing ramparts of the Jaigarh Fort have walkways on its inner side. From the Diwa Burj or the watchtower one can have an excellent view of the town and the Amber Fort, which is located at a short distance. Jaigarh Fort is a must visit for a traveler interested in regal past of India as it is a symbol of the rich historical legacy of Jaipur and it emits a radiance of valor and passion of Rajput rulers. Entrance fee to Jaigarh is Rs. 20 for foreign tourists and Rs 10 for Indian tourists. |
