Gaitor

Situated at a distance of 15 kilometers from the main Jaipur City Gaitor is a spectacular reminder of the grandiose Kachhawa reign in Rajasthan. This venue lies in a narrow valley which is covered with marble and sandstone chhattris of the legendary rulers of Jaipur.

It is the final resting place of the Maharajas of Jaipur. After the transfer of the capital to Jaipur the legendary king Sawai Jai Singh decided to make Gaitor the cremation ground for the royal family of the area. Then from the year 1733 the cremation of every Kachhwaha king were held here. These chhatris are basically open domed pavilions which are set on a raised platform.

The cenotaphs or chhatris of all Jaipur rulers, with the exception of Sawai Ishwari Singh’s who was cremated outside the Jai Niwas Garden were built at this place. The chhatri of Sawai Jai Singh II is of special mention for its carvings that exaggerate it. It is a beautiful structure of white marble that has a splendid dome supported by twenty carved pillars.

Each chhatri or cenotaph in Gaitor has a total unique design and style. All the chattris are covered with bas-relief depicting the tastes of the person it commemorates. A lamp is lit everyday at the cenotaph of Sawai Man Singh since his death.

Gaitor is one of the most celebrated tourist attraction situated near Jaipur. Visitors from all around the world love to visit this venue over and again. It gives an idea of the chivalric magnificence of royal Jaipur.
