Albert Hall

Located just outside the walled city is the sprawling Ram Niwas garden, which has always been a place for recreational activities since the reign of Sawai Ram Singh Ji. Amidst the beautiful Ram Niwas Garden, surrounded by pools, fountains and rows of flowerbeds stands the exquisite Albert Hall, built on 1886 A.D. It is also known as the Central Museum.

The Albert Hall modeled on the Victoria and Albert Museum in London was designed by Sir Swinton Jacob, a British architect. The architectural style is inspired from existing British models, but the arched verandah’s and domed pavilions indicate a clear Mughal influence.

The hall was named after Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria’s husband. Albert’s son the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) laid the foundation stone in 1876 A.D. Combining the elements of English and north Indian architecture known as the pride of the New Jaipur it is a very well maintained and impressive building.

The Albert Hall now has been converted into the Central Museum which proudly displays Rajasthan’s art and culture and outlines the Rajput morality with these lines: "A Rajput puts his life at risk if he is forced to abjure his faith, if he is deprived of his lands, and if his womenfolk are molested."

The Albert Hall has a rich collection of the past antiques and other beautiful collections of miniature paintings, woodwork, metal objects, old traditional ceremonial dresses of the royal families, pottery objects, sculptures, and other arts & crafts.

The museum has some exquisite collection of metal ware, decorative ware, miniature portrait, sculpture, paintings, natural history specimen, an Egyptian mummy along with display of costumes, pottery, brassware, woodwork, carpets and much more.

The Durbar Hall, usually locked, houses several stunning carpets including the magnificent Persian Garden Carpet, one of India’s finest art treasures. It was made in Kerman, Persia in 1632 and represented the garden of paradise based on a quadrangular design.

The museum also has some melancholic specimens on display like a horse skeleton, a human skeleton, and a stuffed cobra.

The main attraction of the museum is the central gallery entirely dedicated to music and dances of the state. Not only the music lovers but in general anybody will like it because the gallery houses the original musical instruments both folk and classical.

Visual explanations of Indian culture, traditions and history are given to the interested visitors.
